Style Update

Autumn/Winter 2016 by Victoria Moss

New Season New Wardrobe

The end of summer always feels a little sad. But, in order to deal with the blues, why not concern yourself with a little sartorial refresher for the approaching winter season. Nothing cheers us up like the impending thoughts of a new wardrobe to ponder over.

This winter has a particularly strong thread of dark, gothic-tinged drama to it. If there was one fabric which abounds, it’s velvet – seen on practically every catwalk, in every guise. Whilst velvet trousers may not be for all (I am yet to be convinced of their flattery), velvet accessories are, if not necessarily the most practical in a rain shower, utterly divine.

It's all about velvet and autumn colours this Autumn/Winter.

Look for deep sumptuous colours berries, inky navy, purples and black – in shoes, boots and delicious evening clutch bags. A velvet blazer – ideally again in those heady winter shades – is your new wear everywhere touch – throw it on over everything.

Shoe-wise, variety is everything.

Platform sandals (if you can track them in velvet, then frankly, you’re winning big) feel very current, as conversely does the skinny stiletto which is attempting something of a stealth comeback. I’d counsel a little practicality here – we’ve been through the flat shoe revolution, we’re not giving up that easily – try it in a mid-height, or even kitten heel and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the elegant effect.

If that all sounds like a world of acute ankle pain, then you’ll probably be far more enamoured with the return of hefty, chunk-soled ankle boots – Chelsea, biker, trucker – all work – as long as they have a decidedly thick base. Wear with floral midi or maxi length dresses and skirts for the perfect take on the new grunge appeal.

For anyone who looks for sunshine at every opportunity, then be charmed by the plethora of yellow hued pieces which are keeping this colour in the style limelight. Ideally go for mustard-y hues, and complement with other burnt autumnal shades for a quirky mid-century look.

The 80's are having another moment…

... But don’t be scared: cone shaped heels and over sized pussy bow blouses are the way to play it – there is lamé out there, but feel free to ignore it. And for anyone game to weather all Theresa May sartorial references, leopard print is having a serious fling with our wardrobes. A fluffy faux big cat coat will turn even the most mundane of jeans + T shirt look into a sharp style statement.
