What to wear to a wedding ...

Stylist's guide to finding the perfect wedding look

If you're still unsure what to wear to the wedding, Bicester Village Personal Shopper Fiona gives her tips for the perfect wedding outfit, whatever your role.

Mother of the Bride

The best way to ensure you get your outfit right for the special day is to ask your daughter for a steer on style and formality. Etiquette advises you buy your outfit after the bridesmaid dresses so you can work with the colour theme. Try and buy your outfit at least three months before the wedding, so if you do require any alterations, there's plenty of time.

"When shopping for a mother of the bride outfit, I always tell my clients to complement the bridal party but not go too matchy-matchy, as that can look a little old fashioned," says Fiona. "Avoid very bold prints and consider block colours, adding interest with statement clutches, shoes and jewellery – classic with a twist!"

Mother of the Groom

The mother of the groom you will be featured in lots of official photos on the day, so you will want to make sure you're looking good. Traditionally, the mother of the bride buys her outfit first and then informs the mother of the groom to avoid any outfit clashes. If that sounds like an out-dated custom, talk to the bride and ask her if there's anything in particular she'd like you to wear or avoid, or any colours she has in mind.Fiona's tip for outfit shopping is to make sure you've got the basics right.

"Take a smoothing undergarment with you, as fabric will then skim and not cling – giving you the best possible foundation when trying on dresses"

The wedding guest

For guests, my best advice would be to consider your whole outfit and not only the dress," says Fiona. "Don’t kill your look with an ill-fitting jacket or coat. A simple dress-coat or tailored blazer will finish off your look without being too heavy.

"Clients often ask me what colours should be avoided. As a rule I’d say white or cream is an absolute no-no; however, black, if worn the right way can look very striking. It's easily lifted with a colourful jacket and accessories, or channel your inner Audrey Hepburn and wear simply with pearls."
