Prepare for the colder weather

Fashion Editor Harriet Quick wraps up the trends.

When the leaves start to fall, it’s nature’s way of telling us to hunt for new Autumn coats. Time is always worth the investment, as a well-chosen top layer will allow you to glide through even the most demanding of days. To help the hunt, here’s the style lowdown.

CITY SMART

There’s a brisk, smart mood in the fashion air and the best signifier is a tip-top tailored city coat. This genre of coats has a firm strong power shoulderline, a sculpted silhouette and is crafted in noble worsted wool, cashmere or tweed. They combine the dapper air of the country gent with the sharp edge of the Wall Street trader. Balenciaga and Raf Simons at Calvin Klein led the city coat revival on the catwalks.

Tip: try small menswear coats and team with stiletto boots.

DANDY STYLES

If the city coat reads ‘I mean business’, then the dandy coat with its soft draped silhouette is all about languor. This style of coat takes its cue from turn-of-the-century bohemians who liked to look permanently ‘semi-dressed.’ With a shawl collar, wrap-around belt and deep pockets, the dandy coat should feel as easy as a bathrobe on a Sunday morning.

Tip: velvet is the choice for evening worn with tailored evening pyjamas.

THE ALLURE OF RED

Red is the colour of passion and empowerment. The number-one hue poses this season's biggest challenge: finding the tone that works for you. The range spans from terracotta reds to fiery orange-tinged hues, to rich ruby and brilliant fuchsia pink. With such a bold colour, the styles that look best are simple and pared down. Let the red do the talking and walking.

Tip: use your favourite nail varnish or lipstick as a colour guide.

GET DOWN THIS AUTUMN

The skiwear staple has firmly entered the fashion frame making a down-filled jacket a staple of the season. They will see you through a blustery walk in the Cotswolds, a long-haul journey and equally look the part over a slip dress for evening. Break out of monotones and hunt out jackets in cobalt blue, fire engine red, emerald green and chrome yellow.

Tip: try an outsize silhouette and sport with straight-leg trousers.
